About this speaker
Dorcas's work in perinatal mental health stems from her personal experience of postpartum depression during a time when support was hard to find. This personal experience, combined with over two decades as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, shaped her commitment to supporting families during the transformative period of early parenthood.
Her work integrates psychodynamic therapy with body-based interventions, focusing on nervous system regulation to help mothers develop genuine trust in their physical responses. Central to her approach is addressing matrescence—the profound identity shift of becoming a mother—while examining the cultural myths and societal expectations that make this transition challenging.
As a certified perinatal mental health professional and child mental health specialist, Dorcas recognizes that a mother's stress responses are often amplified by the very systems meant to support her. Her approach addresses both the physiological and cultural dimensions of maternal overwhelm, helping mothers develop agency in their bodies and choices.
As the mother of a teenage son, she brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work. Through Birth of A Parent, her Substack newsletter, and online content, she brings information that was once only available in clinical settings directly to mothers wherever they are.
She believes that when mothers understand what's happening in their bodies and recognize the impact of cultural expectations, they can move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling empowered.
